Who is the first Writer of the Quran?

We all know that the Noble Quran was revealed to our Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) as a revelation from heaven. But have you ever wondered how this spoken revelation was transformed into a written text, and who was the first person to write the Quran? In this article, we will talk about all the details regarding the writing of the Quran, from the beginning of its revelation until it reached us in the form of the Mushaf.

The Revelation of the Quran

The first verse of the Holy Quran was revealed in the month of Ramadan in the year 610 AD, when Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam) was meditating in the Hira cave. The Angel Jibreel (peace be upon him) appeared to him and recited the verse: “اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ”, “Recite in the name of your Lord who created”.

The revelation of the Quran began when the Prophet was 40 years old and continued for 23 years.

Who is the first Writer of the Quran?

The first to be known for writing the Noble Quran and the most famous scribe of the revelation is the great companion Zaid bin Thabit.

Who is the first Writer of the Quran?

Zaid bin Thabit was responsible for recording the revelation during the life of the Prophet, along with some other scribes, but Zaid was the most famous among them. They used to record the revelation on various materials that were available at that time, such as animal skins, palm stalks, and bones.

Note that the Quran was not compiled into a single Mushaf during the Prophet’s lifetime, because the revelation continued until his death.

After the death of the Prophet, Muslims fought the Ridda Wars, and many of the Companions were martyred. This is what prompted the Caliph of the Muslims, Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), to collect the revelation’s writings into one Mushaf, to facilitate the preservation of the Quran. The Companion Zaid ibn Thabit was the one responsible for the execution.

The third caliph, Uthman ibn Affan (May Allah be pleased with him), completed the mission of compiling the Quran into a single, unified Mushaf.

He unified the Quranic text under a standardized style, known as the ‘Uthmanic Script’ (Al-Rasm al-Uthmani), to ensure that no differences would occur in the modes of recitation among Muslims across the expanding Islamic state.

Conclusion

With this, we have reached the end of the article. We hope you have gained the maximum benefit regarding the revelation and writing of the Quran, until it reached us in its current form, compiled in a single Mushaf in the Uthmanic script.
